Reports to: Engineering Manager, and Supervisor, Project Engineering

Salary Range: $115,000 – $140,000

Working Conditions

  • Combination of an in-office setting in a design office, shop floor, and occasional customer site environment
  • Mix of both sedentary desk work and occasional hands-on work setting within the production environment
  • Potential requirement for overtime hours on evenings and weekends at peak business hours to ensure business continuance.
  • Occasional travel is required (which may include overnight)

Position Summary

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will have a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, as well as vast experience in producing/reviewing technical deliverables that are often part of engineering project execution. The Senior Project Engineer will be providing technical support or oversight on assigned projects that require engineering involvement and discipline. You shall work in conjunction with a Project Manager to control and resolve technical matters both with internal and external project stakeholders/customers/suppliers. Different projects will have different needs for the specific duties to be completed.

These needs may include as follows:

  • Design support, including planning, review, major component selection
  • Preparation of technical documentation and deliverables
  • Technical management of engineering subcontractors
  • Design verification, including review of requirements and verification that those requirements are met
  • Manufacturing support and assist in resolution of non-conformances or engineering change requests
  • Occasionally overseeing more junior project engineers within the department, guiding them on tasks and on priorities, as well as setting timelines and schedules for all or some of the project engineering scope
  • Being the single point of contact on specific engineering projects, working directly with the project manager, customer, technical staff, supervisors, and managers to meet requirements
  • Providing update status reports and follow up progress checks, as well as attending meetings for your assigned projects
  • Be a primary source of information regarding the technical details of projects, communicating with other engineers, and relying on your experience to solve engineering problems
  • Present technical information to customers or colleagues (ex. Design Reviews)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Development of technical documentation in support of the project(s), including documentation such as:
    • Design Documentation (design requirements, FMEA’s, design plans, etc.)
    • Procedures and Instructions (operation manuals, test plans, etc.)
    • Technical and Vendor Specifications (including SOWs used for subcontracted engineering work)
    • Review designs/drawings to ensure adherence to requirements
  • Support the Project Manager (as required) for all quality, risk and technical scope related to planning, executing, monitoring, and closing activities
  • Registration of pressure boundary components/systems
  • Support review of procurement plans, and purchase requisitions (REQs)
  • Provide technical input to support the preparation of requisitions for subcontracted engineering services, and products
  • Occasionally act as the technical Lead for customer interface events, as coordinated by the Project Manager and/or Supervisor, Project Engineering
  • Provide technical support for vendor/supplier inquiries
  • Design/strategy of any testing as required for design verification or development testing, in accordance with the design inputs and the requirements of the client’s Quality Assurance program
  • Seal Engineering Documentation, as required (For Senior Project Engineer only)
  • Support for Manufacturing and assist in the resolution of manufacturing challenges and problems.
  • Support for Operations (assembly/fabrication/installation/commissioning, both at the client’s site and at customer facilities) – including technical coordination of assembly tasks requiring special instructions developed by engineering
  • Input to, and support in the management of, the Rolling Action Items Log
  • Compilation of Lessons Learned on an on-going basis
  • Support to QA for the management of any unforeseen issues requiring documented change (e.g., NCR, Corrective Action, Concession applications)
  • Support to Health & Safety for any safety related project initiatives or needs.
  • Provide input to the Project Manager for project control, such as:
    • Estimate to complete (schedule/labour hours/material and consumables costing)
    • Identification of potential project changes – risks and opportunities for scope/schedule and budget change
  • Provide technical support for preparation of any required COR.
  • Support proposal activities such as quotes and COR’s as assigned by the Engineering Manager/Supervisors
  • Assume additional duties and responsibilities as requested by Management.

Limitations

  • Where an employee is assigned from the Project Engineering organization to a Project, and that project requires specific skills, experience, or a professional designation outside of the capacity of the assigned Project Engineer, the Engineering Manager shall determine when and how to support the project with alternate resources. Alternate resources may include: the Project Engineering Supervisor, an alternative Project Engineer, Engineering Specialists, or outside consultants.

Skills and Qualifications Requirements

Education:

  • Post-secondary education in industrial or mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer Ontario is preferred or a registered EIT

Experience:

  • 7+ years of directly related experience in a relevant industry, where production challenges are continuously unique rather than repetitive in nature.

Skills, Attributes and Competencies:

  • Excellent technical knowledge in all aspects of manufacturing, assembly, purchasing, quality assurance, testing, and project coordination
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills to evaluate and enhance production processes and systems and to identify and solve operations, process, and quality issues.
